Dr. Hanafy specializes in bariatric surgery, which has been the focus of his practice since November 2003. He was instrumental in the development and success of the bariatric surgery program at Pioneer Valley Hospital in Utah. With Dr. Hanafy's departure to join the extremely successful Washington Bariatric and Weight Loss Center in Renton (immediately southeast of Seattle, Washington), the Utah program became part of the Surgical Weight Loss Center of Utah out of Salt Lake Regional Hospital, Salt Lake City, Utah.
Graduated from Alexandria, Egypt, Dr. Hanafy moved to the United States in 1989. In 1996, he completed his general surgery residency training at the University of Illinois program in Chicago, and obtained the American Board of Surgery certification in 1997. He has been a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr. Hanafy is a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS, previously known as ASBS) and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
Dr. Hanafy is experienced in performing the standard bariatric surgery procedures (gastric bypass and adjustable gastric banding) as well as revision surgery. Implementinglaparoscopic "Sleeve Gastrectomy" is the next step. He is open to new procedures or innovations once their role in the long-term successful treatment of morbid obesity is established. The surgery is only one tool in a multidisciplinary team approach to the treatment of morbid obesity and any associated metabolic syndrome.
As a surgeon of the Washington Bariatric & Weight Loss Center of Valley Medical Center, Renton, Washington, Dr. Hanafy continued to deliver excellent surgical care of patients who needed a solution to their struggle with the medical problems resulting from obesity.
